Karen Curran

Creative Consultant, Graphic Designer, Typographer, Illustrator, Design Trainer, Writer

Karen Curran is passionate about her work and helping those in business. She has been a graphic designer and illustrator for more years than she cares to remember and knows design and print inside out. Her extensive knowledge, expertise and attention to detail is what makes her regular clients return year after year to her business, Unicorn Graphics.

Karen believes that attention to detail, having things ordered and presented beautifully, enhances the image of any business.

Karen’s love and history of art and design began long before the advent of computers. As a little girl she was always drawing and dancing. After matriculating from St George Girls High in Sydney she studied and trained in all facets of art pre-production and typesetting, then worked in advertising and media for many years. Companies included KVB Visual Concepts (later to create the KVB Institute of Technology which is now called the Raffles College of Design & Commerce), Dalley Middleton Moore (known as Dalleys or DMM), KG Murray Publishing (later taken over by ACP around 1983), EMI Records and Thomas Marsden Advertising.

After beginning her own studio in 1987 as Unicorn Art & Design, (later to be called Unicorn Graphics), Karen eagerly changed over in 1989 to computers leaving the chemicals and bromides of a Compugraphic typesetting machine and bromide camera behind. Skills and software are constantly updated - based on a Mac but prepares files to cross both Mac and PC - and Karen's technical expertise, (she is also a Certified Trainer), enhances her knowledge, expertise and services to the clients of Unicorn Graphics.

As a member of AGDA and Illustrators Australia Karen agrees with their principles that encourage creatives to respect the value in themselves and does not subscribe to crowdsourcing, spec work nor free pitching. She believes that 'the worker is worthy of their reward'.* The client may think they are getting a bargain, but the designers will not be honoured and there is also a risk of plagerism at those sites, plus a copyright risk.

Karen shares some of these experiences in her Design Blog.

Karen resides in the Blue Mountains with her husband. They have a combined grown-up family with grandchildren.
