What is involved in book design?

A BOOK COVER is dependent on: binding and binding width, choosing/purchasing of photos/illustrations, layout and design balanced with suitable typography, soft cover or hard cover, coated or cello-glazed or spot glazed and more. The author may or may not have definite ideas about what they like in colour or style. All photos must be royalty free and acknowledged.

The BOOK LAYOUT of internal pages is also dependent on text edited correctly and in chapter order, suitable typography to suit the text, table of contents and/or index, copyright notes and more.

ISBN - Thorpe-Bowker is responsible for ISBN numbers for books in Australia. A copy of each published book must be sent by the author to the National Library and to their State Library.

ROLE OF THE EDITOR Even if you are an expert at spelling and grammar, having your manuscript checked by a good editor will make sure it is consistent and readable.

To design a book cover depends on a number of things ... namely,

• title of book, author and any other relevant text for front and back
• exact trim size of cover
• provide your chosen printer contact details so output requirements can be determined from the start.

Each printer has different requirements so it is essential for the designer to contact the printer prior to creating the cover.

- this includes exact size, spine width (which changes according to the number of included pages), CMYK & PDF specs, etc. - We can also arrange printing but still need to determine specs prior.

• target market
• any thought concepts you have in mind
• preference for serif or sans-serif text (curly bits or plain without curly bits)
• preference as to style ie colour shapes & typography or photographic treatment etc.
• whether you have photos of your own or will require stock photography
• any other thoughts or suggestions of similar covers that you like in particular already
