Vinyl Records

The EMI factory that used to press vinyl records was bought by

The Vinyl Factory www.vinylfactory.com.au - which still produces vinyl records in Sydney, Australia!

"The Vinyl Factory Australia is Australia's newest vinyl record pressing plant. At the heart of our operation are 2 fully reconditioned examples of the unique EMI type 1400 automatic press. During our setup phase we invested heavily in new services ( Steam , water, air and hydraulic) to ensure the most stable manufacturing envirnment. The plant has the capacity to manufacture over 3000 12” and 7” vinyl records per day. Our mission is to produce not only the best records in the Southern hemisphere but also amongst the very best in the World. We believe we can achieve this because of our significant investment in modern services and the fully reconditioned type 1400 presses. The work on these presses was carried out by original EMI engineers and represents the culmination of decades of research and investment by EMI when vinyl records ruled the music industry."

Will anyone treasure a download?
The demise of the cd and vinyl record

21 February 2008

Our beloved CD/record shop in our local Blue Mountains village is closing in three weeks after more than ten years with the current owner. It had been running long before the current owner, so has been around for a long time and seemed a permanent fixture and part of the character of our village.

I find this particularly sad because of the ballooning effect on creative talent,as well as the loss of a lovely family operating a great little business that can no longer survive when so much music is now available as downloads only.

I worked for EMI Records back when I was in my youth in the seventies; and that was when there were loads of people involved in the making of a record cover and many artists were employed, let alone the people creating the music and the pressing of the records. I feel sad that the downloading of music means that the tactile experience of thumbing through a beautiful cover and accompanying booklet is lost when everything is a download.

I know time stands still for no-one (and I do love technology) - but for me, the experience of a real book, or a real record cover or special edition cd/dvd cover has it's own particular magic. We purchased record albums for both the music and the art covers.

I wish that the music companies had enlarged their ideas to include music cds placed in record size covers (old size 12"). My first ever record purchase was "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" when I was about thirteen years old. I had saved up for so long to purchase that album. And it was so special. Other treasured albums of the time were by Elton John, Pink Floyd, Queen, Chicago and contemporaries. We read every word and dissected every illustration on the covers and enjoyed them over and over. They were treasured. If we accidentally broke or scratched a record, we saved and purchased another or bought it for a friend.

Does anyone / or will anyone treasure a download? No longer will young people grow older and be able to look back at their youth and say, "wasn't that a fabulous cover? Loved the music and loved the cover. Can I look through your collection?"

I guess the same also applies to photos. Our children and grandchildren love thumbing through old photo albums and asking about family and friends of long ago. The experience fascinates them. I love the idea of the photos on the electronic photo frames - but if people forget to print the photos, what will be left if the digital images can no longer be played? What will happen to the experience of chatting with a relative of friend whilst perusing photos?

Is progression at the detriment of us treasuring where we have been?

I know that technology will continue to change and surprise and I truly have taken to technology like a duck to water - but I will always treasure my youth and the secret memories for which the record albums and music transport me to and the pleasure that brings.
