MOVIE REVIEWS

These are a few of the good movies you may have missed or not seen. Now available at good DVD stores.

Pekka Kuusisto

Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto is one of the most versatile and distinctive musicians working today. Always demonstrating his extraordinary individuality and imagination, Pekka is unusually free and fluid in his approach and has been acclaimed for the spontaneity and freshness in his playing.

In 1995, Pekka became the first Finn to win the Sibelius Violin Competition. He says of his country, “I’m extremely proud that such a small country produced such a lot of really great music. Wherever I am, playing the Sibelius Concerto, I can see the landscapes of my homeland. It’s a bit like carrying around a small box of soil from your garden.” Setting Pekka apart from most other violinists of his generation is his desire and ability to improvise and his love of playing many different styles of music, channelling the same intensity into each genre.

Pekka starred in the recent movie “4” themed on the Vivaldi four seasons, playing his violin in the winter movement.

Pekka played recently (June 2008) at Springwood NSW for the Blue Mountains Concert Society - a most fabulous performance!!!

ABC Classic FM also broadcasted his Sydney concert which was also fabulous!

'4' Four

A breathtaking cinematic musical experience - '4' (Four)

Sayaka Shoji, Niki Vasilakis, Cho-Liang Lin, Pekka Kuusisto

4 is based on Vivaldi's Four Seasons, played against magnificent landscapes, with beautiful character stories woven throughout.

In four corners of the globe, in the four seasons, four outstanding violinists guide us on an extraordinary journey through their four distinct homelands in a breathtaking cinematic musical experience entitled '4' (Four Seasons). From the springtime blossoms of Japan, into the blistering heat and thunderstorms of an Australian summer; from a joyful autumn in New York, to the unforgiving cold and human warmth of a Finnish winter. The resonant and much-loved music of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and the timeless stories they tell, form the backbone to this bold and engaging celebration of friendship, homeland and the cycles of life.

The director's aim was to engage this timeless piece of music as a vehicle for something with a greater purpose –a celebration of homeland, the cycles of life, and the power of music. The film is a journey for the audience, a journey through the four corners of the world, that is at once familiar and unknown. It demonstrates that the timeless rhythms and harmonies of music, and the rhythms and harmonies of life and nature, are one and the same thing. Vivaldi’s piece still speaks to a modern audience in its pure form, but is interwoven at times with other music – Finnish folk music, moments of jazz and others. In this way, the music is ‘refreshed’ and its messages made current. The film seems to touch people, young and old people, from all backgrounds, because it speaks to things that are universal, timeless and without borders. It is a fantastic and breathtaking musical experience for all ages who appreciate music.
