Biblical References to UnicornsHoly Bible KEY: KJV (King James Version), RSV (Revised Standard Version) Psalms Chapter 92:10 (KJV) But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. Numbers 24:8: ... he hath as it were the strength of a unicorn. Job Chapter 39:9-10 (KJV)): Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? (No-one can bind the unicorn into service. It is always his/her choice or freewill.) Psalms 29:6: He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn. Daniel Chapter 8:5 (RSV) As I was watching, a male goat appeared from the west, coming across the face of the whole earth without touching the ground. The goat had a horn between its eyes ... *Only in the KJV (King James Version) is the word "unicorn" actually used. Subsequent translations use other words, such as "ox". There were always a number of scribes, laboriously copying down the text. The Bible may be the inspired word of God, but it was translated into other languages by humans who are fallible and make mistakes which accounts for discrepancies in translations. Biblical numerology originated from their habit of attributing a numeric value to each letter, and they ensured that the horizontal and vertical lines came to the same totals as the script from which they were copying. To add, interpret or make a mistake in copying, was unthinkable for the Hebrew scriptwriters. The King James is just a translation ... one of thousands in which people assign a word or phrase in their own language to a group of Hebrew words. - Anne J |
